VITAMIN C COUNTERBALANCES THE IRON-RESTRICTING EFFECT OF TEA IN STUDY
It has been known for some time that tea, especially black tea, can
restrict iron absorption in some individuals. It is for this reason that physicians
often advise anemic or iron-deficient individuals not to drink tea. It has also been
known for some time that Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, can enhance the absorption of
dietary iron.
In a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, investigators paired tea with Vitamin C. They found that Vitamin C
counterbalanced the iron-restricting effects of black tea in the individuals studied.
