THEANINE IN TEA MAY PROTECT BRAIN CELLS
Increased oxidative stress levels in the brain have been associated with a
variety of brain diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and even brain
cancer. Previous studies have suggested that green tea polyphenol EGCG may lower oxidative
stress levels in the brain. It turns out that theanine (L-theanine) found in both black
and green tea may also help lower oxidative stress in critical parts of the brain.
Rats given theanine were found to have a 20% lower oxidative stress level
in the brain than those not given theanine. According to the study, theanine reduced
oxidative stress in a critical part of the brain for thinking and memory, the
cerebral cortex.
This study in conjunction with previous studies opens the possibility
that tea contains, not one but two compounds that reduce oxidative stress: polyphenols
and theanine. Whether or not this study applies to humans is unknown but suggestive. drpaulsupdates.org
