IS GREEN TEA PROTECTIVE AGAINST LUNG CANCER?
Recent studies suggest that green tea is protective against prostate, breast,
skin and many other cancers but not lung cancer. The following study opens the possibility
that orally administered green tea extract may be an effective chemopreventive agent against
lung cancer.
Note: Difluoromethylornithine (eflornithine) inhibits the enzyme ornithine
decarboxylase and has been used in the prevention of certain experimentally-induced cancers.
Effect of dietary green tea extract and aerosolized difluoromethylornithine during lung tumor progression in A/J strain mice.

The investigator's studied the possible role of orally-administered
green tea extract and aerosolized difluoromethylornithine in controlling benzo[a]pyrene-induced
lung tumors (adenocarcinomas) in mice. Although green tea extract appeared not to
reduce tumor number. it appeared to reduce tumor growth. Difluoromethylornithine did
not appear to have any affect on tumor progression. The investigators suggest:
"a potential role for green tea extracts in preventing the progression of large, aggressive lung adenocarcinomas."
