IS GREEN TEA EGCG PROPHYLACTIC FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE?
Numerous studies suggest that beta-amyloid deposits in the brain are directly related to cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's disease. Hypothetically, any agent reducing beta-amyloid (amyloid beta, Abeta) deposits would be prophylactic for Alzheimer's disease.
Note: "Tau" is a neuron protein important for the assembly and stability of neuronal microtubules. It changes to an abnormal form and becomes a key component of neurofibrillary tangles and beta-amyloid deposits associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Note: "transgenic mice" contain additional DNA genetic material in every cell. Genes are added artificially in order to form a model for a human disease such as Alzheimer's disease.
Green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) reduces beta-amyloid mediated cognitive impairment and modulates tau pathology in Alzheimer transgenic mice.

The study found that that EGCG administered orally in drinking water (50 mg/kg) reduces Abeta deposit formation in this animal model. The investigators conclude:
"Taken together, these data further the notion of EGCG dietary supplementation as a potentially safe and effective prophylaxis for Alzheimer's disease."
