WILL GREEN TEA CATECHINS MAKE CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC AGENTS MORE EFFECTIVE?
Recent studies suggest that green tea catechins may make certain chemotherapeutic pharmaceutical agents more effective against cancer. Brain tumors are often difficult to treat because of the blood brain barrier.
Note: Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent used to treat various forms of cancer. Tamoxifen is frequently used as a breast cancer chemotherapeutic agent and more recently as an effective glioma brain cancer agent.
Note: Telomerase is an enzyme important for the formation of the end strands of DNA. Increased telomerase activity is associated with increased cancer cell activity.
The sensitization of glioma cells to cisplatin and tamoxifen by the use of catechin.

The study found that EGCG inhibited telomerase activity and enhanced cisplatin and tamoxifen activity. Both are related to reduced cancer cell growth. The investigators concluded that:
"EGCG, as a natural product has enormous potential to be an anti-cancer agent capable of enhancing tumour cell sensitivity to therapy."
