WILL PU-ERH TEA HELP LOWER BLOOD CHOLESTEROL LEVELS?
The fermenting process of black tea required to make Pu-erh tea generates many compounds not found in other forms of Camellia sinensis teas.
Note: Postprandial means "after a meal."
Extract of black tea (pu-ehr) inhibits postprandial rise in serum cholesterol in mice, and with long term use reduces serum cholesterol and low density lipoprotein levels and renal fat weight in rats.

The study found that Pu-erh tea extract reduced the postprandial elevation of blood cholesterol levels in mice. Non-fermented (regular) black tea did not have the same cholesterol-lowering effect.
The investigators concluded that fermented black tea has:
"a specific antihypercholesterol effect in rodents, which might potentially aid in the management of hyperlipidaemia in man."
