WILL GREEN TEA LOWER BLOOD CHOLESTEROL LEVELS?
Recent studies have suggested that green catechins have blood
cholesterol lowering effects in both animals and humans. But if it can, how
does it do it?
Note: Cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) is an enzyme in
the liver that helps convert blood (liver) cholesterol into bile acids that are
excreted. It, in effect, drains cholesterol from the blood as it flows through
the liver. Once in the liver, cholesterol passes into the bile and then into the
intestine where it is excreted from the body. Cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase
works differently than statins.
Green tea catechin enhances cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase gene expression in HepG2 cells.

This study suggests that green tea catechins increase CYP7A1
activity at two levels. One, catechins work as promoting agents enhancing
CYP7A1 activity. Two, catechins increase the level of mRNA important for CYP7A1
synthesis. The investigators conclude:
"that the expression of the CYP7A1 gene may be directly regulated by green tea catechins at the transcriptional level."
