IS GREEN TEA EGCG AN EFFECTIVE PROSTATE CANCER INHIBITOR?
A growing number of studies suggest that the most potent polyphenol of green tea, EGCG, may inhibit various types of cancer including prostate cancer.
Note: EGCG-P is the peracetate form of EGCG and is used below as a prodrug.
Effect of a prodrug of the green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate on the growth of androgen-independent prostate cancer in vivo.

The study examined the possible inhibitory effects of EGCG in androgen-independent prostate xenografts in mice. Treatment with both EGCG and EGCG-P suppressed cancer growth, tumor angiogenesis and increased apoptosis of prostate cancer cells. EGCG-P appeared to be more stable and useful than natural EGCG.
The investigators concluded that:
"treatment of EGCG and EGCG-P inhibited tumor growth and angiogenesis while promoting apoptosis of the prostate cancer cells in vivo."
