IS EGCG OF GREEN TEA PROTECTIVE AGAINST PULMONARY FIBROSIS?
Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is the gradual replacement of the lung air sacs with fibrous tissue incapable of exchanging oxygen with the circulating blood. Causes of PF include autoimmune dysfunction, smoking, excessive radiation and the inhalation of noxious gases. The stimulus for air sac epithelial destruction appears to involve increased levels of damaging oxidants. Hypothetically, any substance that lowers the level of damaging oxidants in the lungs lowers ones risk of PF.
Note: Bleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic produced by a Streptomyces bacterium that has been used to treat cancer. It can produce PF in some individuals.

The study examined the possible protective effect of green tea EGCG in an experimental model (bleomhcin-induced PF in rats). The investigators summarize that:
"this study confirms the beneficial use of EGCG in alleviating the oxidative stress induced during pulmonary fibrosis."
